The Maze, also known as the Scary Maze Game, was a Flash screamer created in October 2004 by game developer and programmer Jeremy Winterrowd, originally posted to his personal website "Winterrowd.com".

This Flash prank disguises itself as a simple maze game, in which the player must use their mouse cursor to guide a small dot through the maze. At the start screen, a note informs the player that the objective of the game is to pass through all four levels, and the player cannot touch the walls; however, the game consists of only three levels. The game also explains that it's best with the volume on, but there's no sound in any part of the game.

Since this infamous Flash game debuted in 2004, it has become a popular internet screamer. It has inspired a variety of different maze screamers to be made over the years.

Gameplay
The first two levels are easy to complete. But as the third level is reached, the walls begin to shrink and have sharp turns, making it difficult to avoid touching them. This usually makes the player concentrate on the screen. Then, near the first curve to the left of the maze sharp part (The game also knows if the player is cheating; if they use right-click), a close-up image of Regan MacNeil (the possessed character portrayed by Linda Blair) from the 1973 supernatural horror film The Exorcist pops up along with a loud, distorted scream that plays twice, scaring the player.

The game was uploaded to Jeremy's now-defunct personal website, Winterrowd.com, in 2005. The original version of the game had some slight differences in colors, where orange/yellow with alternative text was used instead of cyan. There's an alternative version of the game that is used in the comedy television series America's Funniest Home Videos, where Regan at the end is replaced with the one from What's Wrong?, due to concerns regarding copyrighted content.

Reactions
Reaction videos

Many people have posted videos of other people reacting to the game. The first reaction video on YouTube was uploaded by OUTLAW713, on February 21, 2006. In the reaction video, a young kid, Justice, is playing the maze. Then, he is surprised by the screamer. Shocked, he starts screaming and repeatedly hitting the computer screen. He then runs to his stepdad, Chad, and starts crying. The original video and channel were terminated or taken down sometime in 2009; however, some reuploads had over 27 million views.
The most viewed Maze Game video was uploaded by YouTube user nalts and has accumulated over 43 million views as of October 2017. However, the video was removed due to the channel's termination.

Level 4
Even though only three levels exist in the game code, some videos circulated about a secret fourth level. On YouTube, there are some fake videos of people supposedly successfully going through the 3rd level and finally entering the 4th level, instead of a screamer. The earliest "tutorial" on how to get to the 4th level was uploaded by the YouTube user SoccerMomDebbie on October 19, 2008.

Other videos of the mysterious level continued to circulate. This video, which has more than 1.25 million views as of 2019 showed the cursor make a shortcut (which in practice would have killed the player) in level 3 unlocks a trigger to level 4 (pictured); once finishing the level, the game goes back to the main screen; text asks the viewer; "care to try a little bit faster this time?".

Outside of YouTube, users on Answers.com also asked about how to access the level; in response, users either replied in a fake way or told the asker that level 4 does not exist.

The fake level 4 was confirmed to have been made in Adobe Photoshop and played using the Microsoft Paint eraser.

Parodies
The Maze has been parodied on Saturday Night Live skit "I Didn't Ask For This". There is also a game called Save Justin Bieber, created by Jeremy Winterrowd himself, which replaces some parts of the game with a picture of Justin Bieber instead of Regan, and the maze color is light purple instead of cyan.

In The Simpsons episode "Flanders' Ladder" (Season 29) the opening segment has Bart Simpson prank his sister Lisa by having her play a game called "Genius Maze", which is a direct spoof of The Maze, however, in this spoof, the jumpscare happened very early on in the 2nd level and has a popup of a zombie, instead of Regan.<nowiki/>
Jingle Bells Reversed was a screamer Flash animation created by Daniel Fowler and was originally found on Newgrounds in 2004. The original animation was deleted but added to the DeviantArt website by the original owner (under the alias: "Fhashstark") with a description claiming that he's the owner of the animation. Jeremy Winterrowd also featured this screamer on his website: "Winterrowd.com". A yellow version of this game can be found on Ebaumsworld and was later posted to Y8.com, a popular flash game website.

The animation starts with an excerpt from the famous Christmas song Jingle Bells playing forward. Following the first extract, the same song was played backward, and a color-inverted GIF of Daniel Fowler, the author, making a weird face flashes with a high-pitched, hilarious-sounding scream about three-quarters of the way through the excerpt.
Where's Waldo? is an old screamer animation based on the British book series Where's Waldo, and has similarities to What's Wrong?. The animation was originally uploaded to Newgrounds by the user PimpMasterKDOG (or simply called by his short pseudonym, KDOG) on Dec 16th, 2001.

The original begins with the main menu and a start button. The gameplay is to find Waldo in crowded people, from the PC game Where's Waldo in the Circus. Once the player finds it (Waldo is behind the grandma's shoulder), the text: "Congratulation" appears before being replaced by "You Found Waldo"; this version does not have a screamer. Another screamer was shortly made after, uploaded to Newgrounds at 10:32 PM, which doesn't contain a screamer likewise to the previous.

Jeremy Winterrowd commented that this was the first screamer he had seen, which inspired him to make The Maze game.

Versions
The original screamer version was published on July 17th, 2002, by TheGuyYouAllHate, with Waldo removed from a large crowd of people, and inviting the player to find him while circus music plays. After about 30 seconds, a picture of Pazuzu from the 1973 horror film The Exorcist appears, accompanied by a scream from the video game Mortal Kombat 2 before cutting back to the image, now with the music muted. In the description, it states that it was made a few weeks ago. TeKZoned hosted this version.

There's an alternate version of this with a flashing image of the What's Wrong face with yellow lights in its eye sockets, accompanied by a different scream, followed by Scooby-Doo's laugh. Another, even shorter version exists, which includes Regan MacNeil from the same movie at the end, accompanied by a repeating sound of Bart and Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons screaming in fear. This version was uploaded to YouTube by DjManny123 on June 19, 2007.

In early 2007, Jackspicer14 created a Flash animation titled "The Simpsons: Find Maggie" which is submitted on the site Winterrowd.com. It follows the concept of Where's Waldo? The animation presents a crowd of The Simpsons characters, challenging viewers to locate Maggie within the crowd. After 30 seconds, the animation shifts to a picture of Brandon from the 2006 horror film The Slaughter, accompanied by the same scream used in The Ultimate Maze. In the Winterrowd version, the animation ends with a link redirecting to the official Winterrowd site.

YouTube variations
On May 27th, 2007, Bristowman created a YouTube video based on both "follow-the-dot" and the Flash, titled "Eye Testing Ben." This video takes the form of a minigame collection, inspired by the channel owner's first name, Ben. The video begins on a white screen bearing the message "Eye Testing Ben (You don't need to take glasses off)." It quickly demonstrates the first level, where players must follow a black dot. Subsequently, a message instructs players to increase the volume as the second game is introduced, challenging them to find Waldo in a picture. A cropped screenshot from a Where's Waldo book appears, depicting a beach scene with a man spilling ice cream on a sunbathing woman's back. After several seconds, an image of The Gentlemen from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Hush" appears, accompanied by a loud female scream. A brief message follows, where the creator hoped that the viewer was startled by the screamer.

On October 11, 2012, StefanD99 uploaded his version titled "Hilarious hidden message in Where's Waldo" on YouTube. It features a low-quality screenshot of "The Goggling Gluttons" page from the Where's Waldo? book series. The screenshot slowly zooms in to the center while the song "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin plays. At the 22-second mark, a ghostly humanoid monster appears with the same scream from Ghost Caught on Tape, accompanied by a growling sound.

On October 17, 2010, PrepareForAScare shared a "scary-pop-up"-based video titled "FIND WALDO (scary pop-up)" on YouTube. The video begins with a screenshot from the Waldo book series, challenging viewers to locate Waldo among numerous other characters. However, Waldo is edited out in the image. As the video advances, seemingly reaching its end, an image of a vampire suddenly appears on the screen, accompanied by a chilling scream resembling that of a young girl. This same screamer image has also been repurposed for use in the Maze Challenge game.

In 2012, SuperLaugh, the creator of the What's Wrong? version of Where's Waldo? animation, uploaded a screamer video titled "The Hardest Where's Waldo Ever" on YouTube. The video opens with an image of a crowded beach, featuring the same circus music used in Where's Waldo? playing in the background. Viewers are instructed to find "Waldo" in the image. However, Waldo is notably absent, and the same screamer from What's Wrong abruptly interrupts after approximately 17 seconds.

In 2018, a YouTube user Mega Osodashi published a lost screamer video (under the name "Crystal the Tanuccoon") on YouTube titled "The Simpsons Comic: Find Ned Flanders In This Panel!" The video was deleted along with her video Baikinman's Heartbeat shortly in November. The video showcases a panel from The Simpsons comic book called "The Yes-Man Who Would Be King" and bears resemblance to the Where's Waldo? screamer. Users are compelled to find Ned Flanders in the comic's panel while a sped-up version of "Watch Out" by Bambee plays quietly in the background. At the 0:25 mark, a white girl with large eyes, large pupils, and a bloody mouth (from Planet Dolan's "15 Creepiest Things A Child Has Ever Said") suddenly appears, accompanied by an extremely loud scream. Following the screamer, a scene from the 1974 Perman episode plays, revealing a pink text that reads "Fooled!" and then shifts to "Look for more videos on my Generation Star YouTube channel!". Both moments are accompanied by a sped-up chorus of "Call Me" by Babe.
SiIvaGunner rip
YTPMVers Grambam36, Ashley, and collaborative music channel SiIvaGunner, uploaded a "high-quality rip" titled "Carnival Music - Wheres Waldo?" to YouTube on October 30, 2022. This video is an apparent rip of Where's Waldo? It kicks off with what seems to be the same crowd from the original screamer game, featuring various characters like Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Shadow from the Sonic franchise, Damn Daniel, and Maki Nishikino from Love Live!. The top left corner features an "Unregistered HyperCam 2" watermark. While carnival music plays in the background, incorporating the same vocals from the Parry Gripp song Do You Like Waffles?. At 0:13, the music fades, leading to a brief silence until the 0:41 mark, where a voice can be heard preceded by a "WAFF--". Abruptly following that, it cuts to the "I AM GOD" image from Sonic.exe instead of Pazuzu, accompanied by the same scream from the original screamer game.

Save Justin Bieber was a flash game made by Jeremy Winterrowd. This game is a parody of Winterrowd's most popular flash game The Maze and is aimed towards Justin Bieber fans.

As stated, the game is supposed to be a parody of The Maze, with a few differences. The paths and main menu are light purple instead of cyan, and the goal is a picture of Justin Bieber's face. The objective is different as well, as the user must "make their way through the crowd to help Justin Bieber". The player is also advised to turn up the volume to hear his popular song "Baby" in the background.

The screamer segment is an inverted picture of Justin's face instead of Regan MacNeil along with the same scream from the original game. The song "Baby" plays in the background but is extremely loud.
What's Wrong With This Picture?, also called What's Wrong? or What's wrong with this image? is an infamous internet screamer created by Jaybill McCarthy, originally posted to his website "Jaybill" in February 2002. Many copies have since appeared on the internet and is an example of an early e-mail chain-letter prank.

Content
The animation disguises itself as a normal stock photo of a dining room; depicting an open window, table, chairs, paintings, and flowers. The viewer is then asked to find something wrong with it, however, there are no actual errors in the picture itself. After about 30 seconds the screen cuts to a grainy black and white closeup of an eyeless woman with a wide mouth putting her hands around the sides of her face with her pinky fingers raised, accompanied by audio of Mrs. Mae Kilgore (from the 1957 film From Hell It Came, played by Linda Watkins) screaming, albeit muffled, distorted and echoing. The animation repeats afterward,

The screamer face itself originates from gettyimages, and was created by photographer 'Gandee Vasan' in 1998 as a stock photo inspired by The Scream painting by Edvard Munch. This stock image was also used (albeit heavily edited) for the cover of the 2001 film Maniacts.

Jaybill himself is the one who doctored the stock photo into its now infamous form we know today, starting with this screamer and then the ones succeeding it.

Impact
Reaction videos
The animation has been reuploaded on multiple websites including YouTube, where it has gained many views. The screamer has also been featured on America's Funniest Home Videos (used there as a substitute screamer in place of Regan MacNeil in The Maze) numerous times. Screamers of this kind became popular as they began to circulate on the Internet. A few more examples of this are What's wrong with this picture?, Zoeken, Forest-wmv and Basement Ghost.

The screamer gained so much traction in its day, that it managed to land a spot in the New York Times on April 22, 2002. The article hosts a small interview with Jaybill, who describes both his website and the screamer which was made "exclusively for the purpose of scaring my girlfriend."

Interestingly enough, the very *first* screamer reaction video on the internet may have originated alongside this screamer. In mid-2002, Jaybill posted an article on his website in regards to a video sent to him from a subject reacting to this screamer. The subject/victim of the video is named "Jose."

Trivia
The screamer image made an appearance on a horror film titled Maniacts (also referred to as Maniacs In Love in some territories), it was released in 2001. The plot of the movie revolves around two serial killers, Joe Spinelli (Jeff Fahey) and Beth Windsor (Kellie Waymire) who escape from an asylum and flee to the country in attempt to live a normal life. The film was released by Redrum Entertainment.

Although there are no screamers in the film itself, the cover of the movie features a heavily edited version of the infamous "What's Wrong" image. The woman has a crimson red tongue, metal prongs in her eyes, nose and mouth. The main characters, Joe and Beth, are also seen on her hands. The French release of the film shows a grainier image of the woman with no eyes, much like the infamous edit by JayBill McCarthy.
Zoeken (Searching), also known as Zoek Het Verschil or Find The 3 Differences, was a screamer animation created by Frits and Stefan Vos in 2004. With a similar concept to What's Wrong?, this animation, of course, has started the origin of Find the Differences screamers. The original platform that hosted the animation is unknown, supposedly at "members.home.nl", since it has the earliest archive of its existence. The release date of the game was revealed to be 2004 from Suriyanto.net.

The animation begins with two identical images of a river and some hills from Norwegian Fjords, and the player is told to find all 3 differences. After 15 seconds, a picture of Amy Peterson from the 1985 horror film Fright Night zooms in and out, accompanied by the Steady Hand roar. It then displays some credits with SpongeBob SquarePants laughing from the Nickelodeon animated television series of the same name, with the email above their names "f.vos6@chello.nl". The image was also used in Noruega's cover book.

This game is also featured on Playscarymazegame.net with the title "Scary Puzzle Game". There are also both English and Chinese versions of this screamer and both can be found on eddy.com.cn.
Hit the Dot was a Flash game made by Jeremy Winterrowd on 2006.

The game is simple; the objective is to hit the white dot. Every time the point is clicked, it becomes smaller and smaller, along with the increase in the dot's movement, making it harder to click. If the dot is clicked five times, it now moves around and was coded to be unclickable, after a few seconds, However, the GIF of Sarah Novak The Exorcist: The Beginning, followed by Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist along with the same scream from The Maze and the promotional game.
