The original theatrical trailer for the 1973 supernatural horror film The Exorcist, made for Warner Bros. contains disturbing imagery. The film features Regan MacNeil and Pazuzu, two well-known figures in the world of horror and screamers. Before the actual movie was released on December 26, 1973. This trailer spawned controversy due to the following reason, as described in a 2009 mirror upload by ShortFormCinema: "The original (rare) 1973 theatrical trailer that film executives banned due to the concern that the content within was too disturbing for audiences."

The trailer begins with Pazuzu (portrayed by Eileen Dietz and voiced by the late Mercedes McCambridge), together with some uncomfortable music in the background. A taxi stops at the house of Regan MacNeil (portrayed by Linda Blair), the girl who got possessed by Pazuzu. Father Merrick, the person who's getting called to save Regan after Pazuzu possessed her, is seen leaving the taxi, with a voice-over in the background saying: "Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on the street, in this house." As the taxi leaves and Father Merrick is about to enter the house, the voiceover continues saying: "A man has been sent for, as a last resort, to try and save her."

Immediately after that, a long montage of black-and-white flashing images of Regan, Pazuzu, Damien Karras, and the assistant of Father Merrick, will appear with very disturbing music in the background.

Controversy
This trailer alone was so disturbing that viewers cried, vomited, or even fainted after seeing it until Warner Bros. pulled the trailer due to the shocking content. One reason for all this is that people in 1973, the year the actual movie was released, were not ready for it because of the stunning special effects at the time.

Trivia
*The face where Pazuzu briefly flashes was later used on the VHS version of the Hanging Munchkin scene from The Wizard of Oz. It was also uploaded to YouTube by a user named hithisisderek237 on April 25, 2016.
*The flashing effects were later used in the trailer of the 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer and it's promotional ads.
After the end of 2005, screamers and shock sites gradually transitioned from sending chain mails to reaction videos where people recorded themselves reacting to videos, animations, and more. This idea was intentionally made for people to record themselves getting scared or horrified by screamers and shock sites. These are very popular on many video-sharing sites, such as YouTube. In other words, screamers and shock sites are the first kick-starters to ever take off the trend. This article is about the history of how it happened.
Overview
In summary, reaction videos are a type of online video content where individuals or groups of people record their live reactions while watching a particular video or media. These videos have become increasingly popular on various social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch. Creators of reaction videos react to viral videos, music videos, movie trailers, and other content. The popularity of reaction videos can be attributed to their ability to elicit emotional responses from viewers and serve as a form of social commentary. Reaction videos come in different styles, ranging from over-the-top reactions to more analytical commentary. Some creators prefer to react in an exaggerated manner, while others provide more thoughtful and insightful commentary. Reaction videos can serve as a way for viewers to experience a video without actually watching it themselves, allowing them to see how others perceive the content. Despite their popularity, reaction videos have also faced criticism for their lack of originality and potential copyright issues. Some creators may use copyrighted content without permission, which can lead to legal issues. Additionally, some people view reaction videos as unoriginal, as the creators are simply reacting to someone else's content rather than creating their own.
In screamers
Reaction videos with screamers are a subgenre of reaction videos that involve tricking viewers into thinking they are watching a harmless or amusing video before suddenly showing them a startling image or loud noise, often called a "screamer". The purpose of a screamer is to shock and scare the viewer, often resulting in exaggerated or comedic reactions from the person watching the video. Reaction videos with screamers gained popularity in the early 2000s with the rise of internet pranks and viral videos. These videos often follow a formula where the person filming themselves reacts to a video or image on screen, while the viewer can see the same video or image. The viewer is led to believe they are watching a normal video, but at a specific moment, the video cuts to a startling image or sound, such as jump scare or a loud noise, often accompanied by flashing lights or other visual effects. This sudden change is intended to startle the viewer and evoke a reaction, which can range from shock to fear to laughter. Creators of these videos often use a variety of tactics to lure the viewer in with a seemingly innocent clip, such as a cute animal video or a funny prank, before building up tension with ominous music or a countdown. The tension is then released with a sudden jump scare, usually accompanied by a loud scream or other startling sound effect. These videos often feature people's reactions to the screamer, including screaming, jumping out of their seats, or throwing their devices in fear.
History
The use of screamers in reaction videos has been around since 2002, with the first known example being "What's Wrong With This Picture?" One of the earliest reaction video featured a blonde woman trying to find the problem with the image before an eyeless woman suddenly appeared with a loud scream, scaring her away. This video was even featured on America's Funniest Home Videos, with host Tom Bergeron reacting to the screamer as well. As time passed, numerous screamers were featured on the show and even prompted a screamer reaction contest held by Jeremy Winterrowd in 2007, titled "Winterrowd Prank Contest". The contest invited people to record their reactions to one of his screamers and submit them to Jeremy. The submissions chosen by Jeremy were uploaded to the contest's channel, prankcontest, where they were publicly voted on by viewers. The winner of the contest received a $100 cash prize. The hoax gained attention when it was featured in one of Unnus Anus' videos, where they discuss "2 Girls 1 Cup", though Mark and Crank did not investigate further on the supposed shock video.
Where's Waldo? is an old screamer animation based on the British book series Where's Waldo, and has similarities to What's Wrong?. The animation was originally uploaded to Newgrounds by the user PimpMasterKDOG (or called by his short pseudonym, KDOG) on Dec 16th, 2001.

The original begins with the main menu and a start button. The gameplay involves finding Waldo in a crowd of people, as seen in the PC game Where's Waldo at the Circus. Once the player finds it (Waldo is behind the grandma's shoulder), the text "Congratulations!" appears before being replaced by "You Found Waldo"; this version does not have a screamer. Another screamer was shortly made after, uploaded to Newgrounds at 10:32 PM, which doesn't contain a screamer, likewise to the previous.

Jeremy Winterrowd commented that it was the first screamer he had seen, which inspired him to make The Maze game.

Versions
The original screamer version was published on July 17th, 2002, by TheGuyYouAllHate, with Waldo removed from a large crowd of people, and inviting the player to find him while circus music plays. After about 30 seconds, an image of Pazuzu from the 1973 supernatural horror film The Exorcist appears, accompanied by a scream from the video game Mortal Kombat 2 before cutting back to the image, now with the music muted. In the description, it states that it was made a few weeks ago. The screamer version was not created by TheGuyYouAllHate, but a friend of his who sent him "this flash and few weeks ago and i thought it should be on ng." The person behind the screamer version remains unknown.

There's an alternate version of this with a flashing image of the What's Wrong face with yellow lights in its eye sockets, accompanied by a different scream, followed by Scooby-Doo's laugh. Another, even shorter version exists, which includes Regan MacNeil from the same movie at the end, accompanied by a repeating sound of Bart and Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons screaming in fear. In early 2007, Jackspicer14 created a Flash animation titled "The Simpsons: Find Maggie" which is submitted on the site Winterrowd.com. It follows the concept of Where's Waldo? The animation presents a crowd of The Simpsons characters, challenging viewers to locate Maggie within the crowd. After 30 seconds, the animation shifts to a picture of Brandon from the 2006 horror film The Slaughter, accompanied by the same scream used in The Ultimate Maze. In the Winterrowd version, the animation ends with a link redirecting to the official Winterrowd site.
YouTube variations
On May 27th, 2007, Bristowman created a YouTube video based on both "follow-the-dot" and the Flash, titled "Eye Testing Ben." This video takes the form of a minigame collection, inspired by the channel owner's first name, Ben. The video begins on a white screen bearing the message "Eye Testing Ben (You don't need to take glasses off)." It quickly demonstrates the first level, where players must follow a black dot. Subsequently, a message instructs players to increase the volume as the second game is introduced, challenging them to find Waldo in a picture. A cropped screenshot from a Where's Waldo book appears, depicting a beach scene with a man spilling ice cream on a sunbathing woman's back. After several seconds, an image of The Gentlemen from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Hush" appears, accompanied by a loud female scream. A brief message follows, where the creator hoped that the viewer was startled by the screamer.

On October 11, 2012, StefanD99 uploaded his version titled "Hilarious hidden message in Where's Waldo" on YouTube. It features a low-quality screenshot of "The Goggling Gluttons" page from the Where's Waldo? book series. The screenshot slowly zooms in to the center while the song "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin plays. At the 22-second mark, a ghostly humanoid monster appears with the same scream from Ghost Caught on Tape, accompanied by a growling sound.

On October 17, 2010, PrepareForAScare shared a "scary-pop-up"-based video titled "FIND WALDO (scary pop-up)" on YouTube. The video begins with a screenshot from the Waldo book series, challenging viewers to locate Waldo among numerous other characters. However, Waldo is edited out in the image. As the video advances, seemingly reaching its end, an image of a vampire suddenly appears on the screen, accompanied by a chilling scream resembling that of a young girl. This same screamer image has also been repurposed for use in the Maze Challenge game.

In 2012, SuperLaugh, the creator of the What's Wrong? version of Where's Waldo? animation, uploaded a screamer video titled "The Hardest Where's Waldo Ever" on YouTube. The video opens with an image of a crowded beach, featuring the same circus music used in Where's Waldo? playing in the background. Viewers are instructed to find "Waldo" in the image. However, Waldo is notably absent, and the same screamer from What's Wrong abruptly interrupts after approximately 17 seconds.

In 2018, a YouTube user Mega Osodashi published a lost screamer video (under the name "Crystal the Tanuccoon") on YouTube titled "The Simpsons Comic: Find Ned Flanders In This Panel!" The video was deleted along with her video Baikinman's Heartbeat shortly in November. The video showcases a panel from The Simpsons comic book called "The Yes-Man Who Would Be King" and bears resemblance to the Where's Waldo? screamer. Users are compelled to find Ned Flanders in the comic's panel while a sped-up version of "Watch Out" by Bambee plays quietly in the background. At the 0:25 mark, a white girl with large eyes, large pupils, and a bloody mouth (from Planet Dolan's "15 Creepiest Things A Child Has Ever Said") suddenly appears, accompanied by an extremely loud scream. Following the screamer, a scene from the 1974 Perman episode plays, revealing a pink text that reads "Fooled!" and then shifts to "Look for more videos on my Generation Star YouTube channel!" Both moments are accompanied by a sped-up chorus of "Call Me" by Babe.

SiIvaGunner rip
YTPMVers Grambam36, Ashley, and collaborative music channel SiIvaGunner, uploaded a "high-quality rip" titled "Carnival Music - Wheres Waldo?" to YouTube on October 30, 2022. This video is an apparent rip of Where's Waldo? It kicks off with what seems to be the same crowd from the original screamer game, featuring various characters like Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Shadow from the Sonic franchise, Damn Daniel, and Maki Nishikino from Love Live!. The top left corner features an "Unregistered HyperCam 2" watermark. While carnival music plays in the background, incorporating the same vocals from the Parry Gripp song Do You Like Waffles?. At 0:13, the music fades, leading to a brief silence until the 0:41 mark, where a voice can be heard preceded by a "WAFF--". Abruptly following that, it cuts to the "I AM GOD" image from Sonic.exe instead of Pazuzu, accompanied by the same scream from the original screamer game.
Hot Blonde in Tanning Bed is a screamer PSA made by The Danish Cancer Association in 2007 that was subsequently mistaken for a real-life shock video. This commercial is about raising awareness about the dangers of tanning beds, which can increase the risk of skin cancer. It is believed that that was hosted on gore site Bloodshows.com, because at one point there was a shock video under the title "1 Girl 1 Suntan Booth" featured on the main page. The video on Bloodshows is lost, so it is not possible to know if both are the same video, despite the fact that the titles give an indication that they are the same.

The video shows a young woman entering a tanning salon. She then slowly undresses until she is in nothing but a bikini. She applies tanning lotion on her body, before sitting on the edge of the tanning bed to apply some on her legs. Suddenly, the cover of the bed comes down on top of her, crushing her to death. It then shows the message "Sunbeds can kill you. Turn them off". It then cuts back to the girl crushed in the tanning bed, which sparks a little and causes her leg to twitch.
July 29th, 1995 is a screamer made by YouTube user ANONYMOUS1998, who is also known as InfamousJRP.

The video starts off with a unnerving picture of someone wearing a Mario costume near a child in a house with stock noises of a baby crying and a person laughing with a echo. However, right at 0:24 it shows the same image, but cropped into Mario's face accompanied by a noise of a woman screaming. After the screamer, it shows static.

The same cropped image appears at 0:39 with the same scream, then cuts back to static.
