ABANTES is a ransomware on Microsoft Windows created by Chris and ElektroKill and released on May 2018. ABANTES has not received wide distribution, although it can cause major damage to the operating system it runs on.
The payload includes a screen locker, a visual component, and a background encryption algorithm. Once installed, ABANTES replaces the desktop wallpaper with an unnerving image of the clown doll from Poltergeist, and several icons on the operating system are changed to a red square with the message "abantes was here" in black lettering. A program window named 'rules' is also opened, instructing the user not to kill any processes, edit MSCONFIG entries, or scan the OS with an antivirus. Proceeding with these actions leads to the system failing the next start-up processes, instead displaying a terminal window stating that it will no longer function, alongside Discord tags from both of the creators: Chris#0538 and ElectroKill#8432. It also states that troubleshooting the MBR will not fix the boot process. In the background, ABANTES uses a strong encryption algorithm to hold the victim's files hostage, including media files, databases, and documents.
