It, better known in its preferred form as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, and alternatively known as Robert "Bob" Gray, and alternatively known in its true form as the Deadlights, is the secondary antagonist of the Stephen King Mythos, specifically serving as the titular main antagonist is the titular main antagonist of the 1986 novel of the same name and its subsequent television, two-part film adaptations, and the 2025 prequel TV series Welcome to Derry, and a minor antagonist in the 1987 novel The Tommyknockers and the 2011 novel 11/22/63.

It is an ancient, otherworldly, and eldritch cosmic entity that takes the form of one's worst terrors (particularly of children) before feeding on them. Since crash-landing onto Earth, it has terrorized a region that would become the township of Derry, Maine, all while taking the form of a dancing clown named Pennywise in modern times. It became the archenemy of the Losers Club (primarily Bill Denbrough, the older brother of deceased Georgie Denbrough, who seeks to avenge him), and the main reason the group formed.

This twisted, insidious, evil extradimensional eldritch entity of a cosmic, alien nature had a form humans could only comprehend as a giant spider. Still, It would almost always disguise itself as a clown named "Pennywise the Dancing Clown" to attract children so that It could capture and devour them, as they were an easier target. It could also morph into any form It wished, generally based on its victim's fears. Due to It's shapeshifting abilities, the true identity of the creature is never established, lacking any real name, gender, or identifiable species; thus the creature is only referred to as "It" by its enemies, despite its main masculine appearance.

Pictures of It's main form, Pennywise, are commonly used in screamers, like in other videos, games, and websites.

Portrayals

It as Pennywise was portrayed by the late Tim Curry in the 1990 miniseries, and Bill Skarsgård in the two-part film adaptation and the prequel TV series It: Welcome to Derry.
