Spritecranberry.net is a shock site that originally redirected to a graphic referral site to a YouTube video "How to Express Your Dog's Anal Glands at Home – Veterinarian Recommended Way (GRAPHIC)" of a veterinarian inserting his finger inside a dog's anus to express his anal glands. The site was registered in November 2019 by a user slappersirdu, and the creator was revealed to be living in Toronto, Canada, to coincide with the yearly rise in Sprite Cranberry memes. Hoaxing unsuspecting victims into following the link became a popular prank on social networks in the following month.
Origin
The site later changed to a redirect of a music video, named Shawty Wanna Fuck by Maxeboy. It doesn't contain anything NSFW but contains explicit lyrics. A clean version can be found here, which replaces the explicit lyrics with a reverbed fart.
In September 2020, the site changed to an image claiming that the site was an online social experiment conducted by James Woods Regional High School (which is a fictional school featured in Family Guy) and that they can find the study on another site called Spriteharder.com. However, that site is redirected to a YouTube video of a guy peeling off his dead toenail. The site has been deleted since then.
Spritecranberry.net eventually redirected to an image of a botched hair transplant, before changing to an image of a cantaloupe along with a text stating that Spritecranberry.net is a "dead meme who even cares anymore". The site also stated that "if you're looking to prank your friend in the middle school cafeteria with a funny video of a dog's anal glands or something, go home." After one month, the site was deleted.
Spread
On November 2nd, 2019, Redditor macnoah6996 posted the link to the site to the/r/pewdiepiesubmissions subreddit, gaining 12 upvotes.[1] On November 4th, Redditor hitchance reposted an iFunny post by an unknown person hoaxing users into going to spritecranberry.net, with the post gaining over 750 upvotes in two weeks.[2] Starting on November 5th, text posts and memes containing the link to the site were posted to like /r/PewdiepieSubmissions[3], /r/ComedyNecrophilia[4], /r/memes[5], and among other subreddits. On November 7th, 2019, Instagram meme account yourlordandsaviorrealjesus reposted one such meme, with the post gaining over 36,000 likes in two weeks.[6]
Spriteharder.com
Spriteharder.com was a bait and switch shock site created and hosted by the same person who made the infamous Spritecranberry.net site. This site was made in 2020.
Despite appearances, the URL didn't belong to a website; it was merely a redirect to a YouTube video of a guy pulling off his dead toenail. Spritecranberry.net used to display an image that told users to go to this redirect, before it was changed to a mildly graphic photo of a man who has a hair transplant.
Unfortunately the website in now deleted and cannot be accessed on the Wayback Machine.
Despite Spriteharder not meeting on everyone's radars quite like Spritecranberry did, a Screamer Wiki user created an image in its aesthetic to commemorate the shock site in May 2021. The image uses the same background but features a different font; the original text about James Woods Regional High School was replaced with information about the Screamer Wiki, and the YouTube link was swapped for the one used by Pnrtscr.com.[7][8]
