Upon breaking the object open, they discovered approximately 17 dead spiders. Users questioned if the spiders were already dead or not, if a living spider ate his own kind to survive, or how exactly they managed to end up in the ''Wii U'' in the first place. A commenter later identified the object as a mud dauber wasp nest containing paralyzed spiders. In the subsequent pictures, the spiders appeared to be potentially dangerous, venomous recluses (such as brown or [[wikipedia:Chilean recluse spider|Chilean recluses]]), whose venom can cause tissue necrosis or systemic failure. Trypophobia is an intense discomfort triggered by the sight of repetitive patterns, clusters, or irregular groupings of small holes, bumps, or bubbles. When exposed to these patterns, individuals often experience skin crawling, itching, shudders, anxiety, or a strong urge to look away. In extreme cases, notorious or heavily edited images combine these patterns with human or animal features, such as eyes appearing from within the holes.
In a 2003 article titled "''Is This a Breast Rash Caused by South American Larvae?''", [[wikipedia:Snopes|Snopes]] investigated a viral email hoax. The article combined a digitally edited photo of a woman's breast featuring lotus seed pod clusters with a fictional tale about an anthropologist named Susan McKinley, who contracted an insect larvae in South America. According to the story, McKinley contracted an insect larvae which resulted in a bizarre rash on her left breast. After visiting a dermatologist, they discovered 5-centimeter-deep holes filled with live, squirming larvae consuming her tissue.<ref>snopes.com/fact-check/south-american-larvae-breast-rash/</ref>

Shock sites that can induce a "shocking" effect without showing of pornographic or gore content, relying instead on other equally disturbing/disgusting elements. These are terms that trigger our curiosity the same way traditional shock sites do. However, while some might include mild gore or sexual undertones, they do not display the graphic content that falls under the criteria of real shock sites.
Bonsai Kitten
Bonsai Kitten was an internet hoax launched in December 2000 by a creator using the pseudonym Dr. Michael Wong Chang (an MIT student). It was originally hosted on various university servers, including MIT and the University of Michigan, before moving to its own domain, Bonsaikitten.com.
The website falsely claimed that a kitten's skeletal structure could be molded as it grew—drawing a parallel to the Japanese art of shaping bonsai trees or the historical practice of foot binding. It provided instructions and "development stages" suggesting that a kitten placed inside a glass jar would conform to the container's shape as it grew. The concept sparked massive global outrage from animal rights activists who believed the abuse was real. The FBI launched an investigation into the creators, but ultimately filed no charges after determining it was an elaborate hoax and that no actual animals were harmed.
Gamer Leg
Gamer Leg was a leg marked by deep pressure creases, purplish-red and blue splotches, and skin irritation caused by prolonged sitting. The term gained widespread attention after a photo went viral on r/greentext on Reddit,[1] followed by subsequent reposts on other platforms encouraging users to search for "Gamer Leg" online.[2]
The "Gamer Leg" belonged to an American League of Legends player, Martin "Marn" Phan.[3] The image first surfaced online after Marn was diagnosed with Vasculitis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the blood vessels.[4] Marn reached out to medical professionals to rule out blood clots and was later treated for skin vasculitis.[5] Although the underlying medical condition was diagnosed years prior, the physical appearance captured in the photo was not caused strictly by gaming; rather, it is commonly associated with factors like prolonged sitting and poor blood circulation, also known as stasis dermatitis.[6]
South32
In 2018–2019, South32.com was defaced to display a moving picture of the possessed figure from The Russian Sleep Experiment, accompanied by the text "South32" flashing on the forehead and across the screen alongside loud laughter. Text above the display implied that 'South32' was formerly an "adult film production company."[7]
In 2016, a neo-noir film called South32 was released. The film was written and directed by Luigi Bian,[8] who is commonly associated with, and referenced by, South32.com multiple times.[9] However, it was revealed that Luigi Bian was a fake name. The real person behind Luigi Bian was Saeid Yomtob Ian, an Iranian sex trafficker.[10] He used South32.com to extort the mining company South32 and used methods such as cybersquatting.
The dispute began when the mining company, BHP Billiton, filed complaints regarding the domain South32.com, which Luigi Bian had owned since April 3rd, 2012.[11] BHP Billiton had chosen the name South32 for its new spin-off company in 2014 because it refers to the 32nd parallel south line of latitude, which links the corporation's major operating regions in Australia and Southern Africa.[12]
According to reports, Luigi Bian targeted the mining company through various forms of digital vandalism, including altering text to mock the company and temporarily redirecting or modifying South32.com to display inappropriate content before the domain's focus shifted in May 2026.
Harlequin Fetus
On January 16, 2004, an Urban Dictionary user, Bubby the Tour Guide, submitted an entry warning users against looking up the term, describing the associated image as "the most horrifying image of a disease anybody has ever seen." Another user later submitted an entry for "Harlequin Fetus" defining it as "the most severe form of congenital ichthyosis" which accumulated over 500 upvotes.[13]
By context, Harlequin ichthyosis is a rare genetic skin disorder characterized by thick, pale scales covering an infant's body. These rigid plates are extremely painful and tend to crack and split apart frequently. They can pull at and distort facial features while restricting breathing and eating. Affected babies often present with pronounced red eyes due to inverted eyelids (ectropion). Mutations in the ABCA12 gene are responsible for the condition. While the term "harlequin fetus" is sometimes viewed as colloquial or informal, medical literature historically uses it to describe the condition's development in utero, even though infants are born with the disorder.
Some screamers and shock sites have used these images. One example, Party Man, is a page on Encyclopedia Dramatica with an image depicting a toddler with harlequin ichthyosis standing on a couch. Below the image is the caption "Wanna dance, sweet-cheeks?"
Clock Spider
Clock Spider refers to images of spiders (typically huntsman spiders) photographed standing or crawling near a wall clock. In these photos, the spider's long legs often peek out from behind the clock face, or the specimen being large enough to completely cover the timepiece underneath.
The first photographs of the Clock Spider were captured in April 2003 while visiting a home in Darwin, Australia. Although widely identified as a huntsman spider, the photo's original owner insisted the specimen was a wolf spider instead, which are two entirely separate families of arachnids.[14][15]
In a scientific context, huntsman spiders frequently seek out spaces behind wall clocks because these spots offer dark, undisturbed shelter and safety from predators, while also attracting household prey insects. Additionally, some male huntsman spiders can produce a rhythmic, vibrational drumming with their abdomens that coincidentally resembles the ticking sound of a clock.[16]
Urinalpoop.org
In the late 2000s, a group of users gathered for an impromptu conversation on IRC. Among the topics discussed was the absurd concept of pooping in a urinal. Obsessed with the idea, one of them went on to register the domain urinalpoop.org.[17]
The website cataloged community-submitted stories including one titled "Chapter 3: Tales of Urinal Incidents." This specific chapter describes a group of friends tailgating in a van before a girls' varsity soccer game, drinking roughly six beers each before heading into the school's boys' bathroom. The bathroom contained two urinals and a single stall. With the toilet stall occupied, one friend (too desperate to go), decided to take a dump directly into a urinal. The group burst into uncontrollable laughter, causing the friend to choke on his gum and vomit all over the toilet area before they all fled the scene. The following day, the school had to prop the bathroom doors open just to air out the room for the janitor.[18]
After finishing the site, the creator shared the link in a few IRC channels and stepped away, expecting it to remain an obscure niche site. About a month later, the site experienced a massive traffic spike with tens of thousands of visitors. Server logs revealed the link had been posted on Goatse.cx, which also originated from IRC.[18]
According to the site's history, urinalpoop.org initially linked to urinal.net which had a gallery of clean, unsoiled urinals, and solicited user submissions for its own collection. The site lay dormant until mid-2002, when a thread on the Something Awful forums inspired the creator to return and completely redesign it. Following these updates, the creator abandoned the site entirely. Between late 2005 and early 2006, the domain expired and was replaced by a placeholder page reading: "urinalpoop.org: What you need when you need it."[18]
Dolphinsex.org
Aside from urinalpoop.org, Goatse.cx linked to another specific website called dolphinsex.org.
The website featured mating guides, an FAQ, and general instructional resources detailing human-dolphin interactions. The creator of the site introduced himself under the alias "Dragon-wolfe Dolphinn" describing himself as a musician, pre-vet student, and "delphinic zoophile." He explicitly distinguished zoophilia from non-consensual bestiality, arguing that dolphins are highly intelligent, emotional creatures that use sexual play for social bonding, trust, and affection rather than purely for procreation.[19][20]
Wii U 4chan
On December 25, 2013, a 4chan user allegedly found a broken Wii U containing a mysterious object. Upon breaking the object open, they discovered approximately 17 dead spiders. Users questioned if the spiders were already dead or not, if a living spider ate his own kind to survive, or how exactly they managed to end up in the Wii U in the first place. A commenter later identified the object as a mud dauber wasp nest containing paralyzed spiders. In the subsequent pictures, the spiders appeared to be potentially dangerous, venomous recluses (such as brown or Chilean recluses), whose venom can cause tissue necrosis or systemic failure. When one of the spiders unexpectedly moved, the user panicked, evacuated the house, called an exterminator, and ended the post on a cliffhanger.[21][22]
The story was later revealed to be a hoax. The original images can be found on ViralNova's article titled "What This Guy Found In His Kitchen Is Fuel For My Nightmares. I Would Burn My House Down." The photos featured in the article included images that were excluded from the 4chan post.[23]
Trypophobia
Trypophobia is an intense discomfort triggered by the sight of repetitive patterns, clusters, or irregular groupings of small holes, bumps, or bubbles. When exposed to these patterns, individuals often experience skin crawling, itching, shudders, anxiety, or a strong urge to look away. In extreme cases, notorious or heavily edited images combine these patterns with human or animal features, such as eyes appearing from within the holes.
In a 2003 article titled "Is This a Breast Rash Caused by South American Larvae?", Snopes investigated a viral email hoax. After visiting a dermatologist, they discovered 5-centimeter-deep holes filled with live, squirming larvae consuming her tissue.[24]
On May 5, 2005, a user named holephobia posted a thread titled "Phobia of Holes" on the SocialPhobiaWorld forum, linking to his now-defunct Geocities website.[25] Seeking an official name for it, the site's webmaster reached out to the Oxford English Dictionary's "Ask Oxford" service. On May 23, 2005, Oxford's Margot Charlton responded, recommending the term "trypophobia" over "trypaphobia."[26]
