Content Warning! |
Google Hammer was a shock site and malicious variant of Meatspin created in 2012.
Upon opening, the Flash content for Meatspin and its accompanying music begin autoplaying in a continuous loop. Simultaneously, a barrage of alert pop-ups appears on the screen, trapping the user and preventing them from closing the window. The pop-ups primarily display the lyrics of the accompanying song You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), which read:
- Awww, don't leave yet! The fun has just begun!
- Sing along with me!
- You spin me right round, baby
- right round like a record, baby
- ONE MORE TIME
- THAT NEVER HURT DID IT
Another browser payload overloads Shockwave Flash using a custom SWFObject script. This causes non-Internet Explorer browsers to crash, while Internet Explorer triggers dialog boxes, alters the window title upon exit, and shrinks the browser window to a quarter of its size in one of the four screen corners.
The title page for Google Hammer jokingly states that "Marketing Information So Good It'll Spin Your Head Right Round.".
A meta description accompanying the fake tagline also read:
"Your resource for diving headfirst into internet marketing the right way. Once you experience Google Hammer, you'll wonder how you ever survived without it."
Infoslash.net
The source code for Google Hammer was largely taken from Infoslash.net, which was a typosquatting site designed to mimic Slashdot through the clever wordplay of "Info Slash (dot) net."
Infoslash was actually much more popular than Google Hammer, and frequent mentions of it can be found in old discussion forums as well as on Reddit and Facebook at present times. On March 10, 2009, a description was contained within a Steam group named "Team Infoslash" where the website was listed as their official homepage.[1] The same script featured on Infoslash.net is found on a Brazilian mirror site, top5.lupee.com.br:80/top.htm, where the song lyrics are replaced with dialog box labels in Portuguese.
Makemoniesonline
Previously, a variation of Google Hammer was formed by a Meatspin mirror called Makemoniesonline, though it was less malicious. Fears were held by some users that harmful applications could be downloaded onto their devices by the website, but this claim was debunked.
Explicit lyrics referencing Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" are featured on the website, and an alert box reading "You've been Dick Rolled" would suddenly appear while visitors browsed. As noted by Urban Dictionary user Spyker44, this screen is displayed when the site is closed right after the animated image pops up, and additional phrases like "ONE MORE TIME" and "THAT NEVER HURT DID IT" are left unchanged within Google Hammer's source code. Because the title page used to be displayed as "April Fools Bitches," it is suggested that the website came out as early as April 1st, 2008, while Rick Astley's song suddenly spiked in popularity on that same day because YouTube used the 4chan meme for its April Fools' Day event and users of several websites voted for "Never Gonna Give You Up" in a poll for the New York Mets' rally song.
Despite Google Hammer originating there, Makemoniesonline was originally derived and technically drawn from Sourmath (most notably Nobrain.dk), as evidenced by its exact content replacement, browser windows, and pop-ups.
