California.mp4 is a shock video which depicted a picture of Leonardo Alexander Caripe Brito's bloodied face deepfaked into singing California Gurls by Katy Perry with the software Wombo. The video was sent in an email to approximately 187 recipients from a mailing list on October 31, 2022, from a Gmail account named after the video's subject.
Description
The email, simply titled "Hello.", said, "My name is Leonardo Alexander Caripe Brito. This is what I look like on video." Attached below the email is the California.mp4 video. Since Gmail could not preview the video, therefore leaving the thumbnail empty, it needed to be downloaded in order to view it. When the recipient replied to the email, the Gmail account automatically sent a still frame of the video in return.[1]
There was a similar email titled "Hello!" which said "My name is Leonardo. I exist." The video "leonardo.mp4" showed a part of El Patron where it zooms into Leonardo's corpse.
Response
One of the recipients allegedly obtained the Gmail account's assigned IP address, email address, and phone numbers of a person named Jacob, but it was random information since they believed it was a scammer, leading to them sharing the information. A user on the Scammer Info forums believed the information to be real, and shared it on the forum, as well as another website which is unknown. However, according to the Scammer Info user, it was proven to be false, as the Gmail account claimed that they hired Jacob to send the email.[1]
